“I try to tell stories in poems. I tend to write in the first person. The reader should assume they’re listening to a person speak,” said Sherwin W. Howard in a 1988 newspaper interview with Weber State University’s “The Sign-Post.”Howard was named Utah poet of the year by the Utah State Poetry Society in 1988 for this collection of poems which won the Pearle M. Olsen Book Award.

This poet’s voice is filled with “eloquent and emotionally honest glimpses into human experience,” writes the poetry society in the original preface to the book. Howard’s “realistic yet restrained voice expresses sober themes in precise language, illustrates erudite observations with homespun truths, and balances pathos with humor. The reader will want to return often to the people and places memorialized in these poems.”This work is divided into three sections.

The first deals with Howard’s memories of growing up in Cedar City, Utah. The poems in this section include: Beginnings, Helping My Brother to Ride Bareback on Grandpa Corrys Cow, Eating Raspberry Jello on Fast Sunday on a Tin Roof, Two Recollections from the Cedar City Second Ward, Discovering Macaulay in Grandmothers Cellar, Playing Strip Poker Once in a Sheep Wagon, The Airplane Model, and Apprentice Bombardiers. The second section is an assortment of memories later in Howard’s life.

Poems include: Damn Forest Service Roads, The Songs That Uncle Harold Sang, East Fork of Burning Creek, Winter Fence, Waiting for Santa Claus, The Night the Kittens Were Given Away, English IV, Third Period: Ruth McFarland, A Winter Walk, Afternoon, The New Hired Man, Tina and Beacon Hill, The All-American Hero, The Last Innocents in the State of Wyoming, Bills Gift, and Rachel Adams and the Death of Frederick Winter. The last section deals with a polygamous family and is called “Morrisundville: 1863-97.” Poems include: Anna Elizabeth Morrisund: First Wife, Rebecca Woodley: Second Wife, Elizabeth Morrisund: Granddaughter, Rachel Yardley Jones: Third Wife, Deborah Amanda Beechley: Fourth Wife, Emmaline Jones: Granddaughter, Ebeneezer Whitworth Morrisund: Patriarch, and Morrisundville: The Settlement.Enjoy.
